Marcus Ulpicus Trajanus, known as Trajan, was born in 53 in Spain. He was the first Roman Emperor to not be Italian. He was adopted in 97 by Nerva, and he had an aggressive foreign policy once he succeeded the throne. He was a very successful Roman emperor, winning the wars against Dacia, rebuilding the Appian Way, draining the Pontine Marshes, and building an aqueduct, theatre, and the Forum of Trajan, including Trajan's column, before his death in 117.
