Saint Augustine was born in the fourth century. His mother, Saint Monica, brought him up as a Christian and was a great influence on his life. However, he gave up Christianity when he went to school in Carthage and became a great rhetorician. In his work Confessions he repents for the wild youth that he spent in Carthage. He went to Rome and taught Rhetoric, then he went to Milan to teach. He was drawn to Saint Ambrose, the bishop of Milan, and he embraced Christianity again. He was baptized and went to live a monastic life with a group of friends. He remained in Hippo as a Christian priest for the remainder of his life until he was killed in the Siege of Hippo by the Vandals.
