Publius Ovidius Naso, better known as Ovid, was born in Sulmo in the year 43 BC. He was trained to be a lawyer, but he liked to run with the literary crowd in Rome. He was known to the emperor Augustus and shot into fame for his poetry in his early years. In the year 8 AD he was exiled to Tomis for an unknown reason and lived there until his death in 18. He wrote many poems, and they were categorized into the following groups: erotic poems, poems of exile, and mythological poems. In the latter of the three categories lies his most famous and perhaps greatest work, titled Metamorphoses.
